The Season of Lenten

The Lenten Season is a time when people remember Jesus Christ's sufferings and death. During the Lenten season, people usually do three things: pray, fast, and give alms. In addition, two important virtues are observed during this season. Three basic steps can be taken to achieve mercy and compassion. First and foremost, rest in God.

The Lenten season begins immediately following the Epiphany festival. Lent is a liturgical season that begins on Ash Wednesday and ends 48 days before the Paschal Triduum. The Lenten fast is traditionally observed for 40 days, starting on Ash Wednesday and ending during Holy Week. Sunday is exempt from the Lenten fast because it is the feast of our Lord's resurrection. However, in the Western Church, Lent Sundays are still part of the Lenten liturgical season, and worship services are more subdued. During Lent, the Gloria and the joyful "Alleluias!" are not said until the Easter season.

Churches haven't gone entirely off the rails with their Lent teachings. Lent is meant to help us prepare for our Lord's return, and it does reflect Christ's fasting and temptation in the wilderness. The issue is not with the Church's teachings, but with how members of the Church observe Great Lent rituals and the rejection of Lent's true meaning in five points.
