During World War II, Major General Edward P. King Jr. was compelled to surrender his soldiers to the Japanese army on April 9, 1942. These forces consisted of American, Filipino, and Chinese soldiers that were taken prisoner of war. Many troops died as a result of the heat, weariness, and famine while they marched 150 kilometers to a prison camp. This journey became known as the Bataan Death March.

The fall of Bataan, also known as Araw ng Kagitingan or Bataan Day, is a significant event in Filipino history. The Day of Valor commemorates the sacrifice and bravery of those who perished in battle, as well as the valiant defense of Bataan, which was critical to the war effort and the Allied Forces' eventual victory.
